Turntable.fm’s co-founder Billy Chasen has his business on lock, literally. You don’t use keys to enter Turntable.fm’s HQ, you send a text message from a white-listed phone number and voila, it opens. This is a much smarter, safer and cheaper option than handing out a ton of keys.
UPDATE: This won a Twilio prize and he explains how to build one yourself.

I don’t think this is as secure as he thinks it is. It opens and closes the lock via text messages based on a white-list of phone numbers. If your number is on the white list, the device will open and close. If you’re not on the list it won’t do anything. Considering how easy it is to spoof your caller ID, I wouldn’t really trust this to secure anything important. All someone would need to know is the phone number of the lock and the phone number of anyone on the white list.
Neat idea though.
